Residential\u00a0Interior Furniture Design. 1959\u20131984<\/em> will open at the Museum of Applied Arts and Design, presenting works by women designers who made a significant impact on the evolution of Lithuanian\u00a0furniture design.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The exhibition presents women furniture makers from the first\u00a0generation of professional design, who paid a great deal of attention to forming the public\u2019s home environment. The women furniture creators who started\u00a0working in relatively great numbers in the 1950s\u20131960s gave a strong\u00a0stimulus to the Lithuanian furniture modernist tradition, which they later combined with new design trends dictated by the age. Lithuanian women\u00a0designers worked under the complicated conditions of the Soviet regime,\u00a0when creative initiatives were being suffocated, and there was a lack of\u00a0professional information and production materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a long time, Lithuanian Soviet-era furniture design was a little known,\u00a0marginal field. However, art research in the recent decade has uncovered\u00a0the panorama of furniture creators from the second half of the 20th century,\u00a0prompting taking a closer look at the creative processes underway at the\u00a0time, and to evaluate them in the cultural and social context.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though the manufacture of\u00a0household furniture was not considered as prestigious as public interiors, it,\u00a0more than any other field, was in very close touch with the consumer \u2013 the\u00a0ordinary person, their daily life and personal experiences. When creating\u00a0furniture for residential dwellings, the creators had to be very much in tune\u00a0with the rhythm of daily life, to know everything about the lifestyle of families\u00a0who lived in apartment buildings, and to adapt to small spaces and less than\u00a0perfect living conditions. The women designers grasped the intricacies of\u00a0residential dwellings, so the objects they designed half a century or more\u00a0ago are fondly used to to this day.
