One City \u2013 Many Stories\u201c opened in the National Museum in Krakow on May 23. The exhibition shows Vilnius in an exceptionally complicated historical period. We become acquainted with the city thanks to paintings, graphics, photographs and other works of contemporary artists selected by two curators \u2013 Giedr\u0117 Jankevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117 and Andrzej Szczerski. A visual story about Vilnius is a significant example of cultural cooperation between Lithuania and Poland. In November, the exhibition, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Vilnius, will be opened in the LNMA National Art Gallery.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the years 1918\u20131948 Vilnius passed from hand to hand \u2013 it became part of Poland and Lithuania and was occupied by both the Nazis and the Soviet army. Occupations and wars radically changed the social structure and population of the city, and also influenced its architecture and urban planning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The seven-part narrative of the exhibition shows how the artists of the then multi-ethnic and multi-cultural Vilnius perceived their city. Apart from representatives of Polish culture, an important role in creating this image was also played by Lithuanian, Jewish and Belarusian artists.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The exhibition presents the works of Vilnius artists stored in Polish and Lithuanian cultural heritage institutions. In addition to the well-known and repeatedly presented works by the classics of Vilnius art, e.g. Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Jan Bu\u0142hak, Ludomir Sle\u0144dzi\u0144ski, Bronis\u0142aw Jamontt, Micha\u0142 Rouba and Jerzy Hoppen, you can also see paintings and graphics of the younger generation of artists, which included e.g. Hanna Milewska, J\u00f3zef Horyd and Hadassa Gurewicz-Grodzka. Some of their works are shown for the first time. Glimpses of the avant-garde on the artistic scene of Vilnius, which is considered an important centre of neoclassicism, are represented by paintings by Vytautas Kairi\u016bk\u0161tis and his colleague W\u0142adys\u0142aw Strzemi\u0144ski, photographs by Bauhaus student Mo\u0457 Ver (Mosh\u00e9 Raviv-Vorobeichic), watercolours by Bencion Michtom, and a model of the famous statue of Adam Mickiewicz by Zbigniew Pronaszko. The image of Vilnius was extended by the Lithuanian chapter, consisting of landscapes and portraits by Vladas Dr\u0117ma, Antanas Gudaitis, Juozas Mik\u0117nas, Algirdas Petrulis and Adomas Varnas.
