\"\"<\/a>Amber comes upon us unexpectedly; you never know when the sea will\u00a0<\/span>wash a little piece out by your feet. But ever since the earliest times, no one\u00a0<\/span>has been left unmoved upon finding even the tiniest particle of amber on\u00a0<\/span>the seashore. Artists\u2019 relationship with these fossilised resins is also\u00a0<\/span>complex: it is a complicated material, one that is not so easy to work with \u2013\u00a0<\/span>due to the history of amber, its origins wrapped up in legends, and for its\u00a0<\/span>symbolic capital. After all, having cut through a piece of amber, thinking\u00a0<\/span>about the work yet to be, unexpected things may also lie ahead. Amber is\u00a0<\/span>full of surprises, not all of them being so pleasant. It cannot not arouse\u00a0<\/span>emotions \u2013 when encountering amber, strong feelings wash over both\u00a0<\/span>artists and audiences alike.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unexpected and intensive feelings are hidden in the very legends of the\u00a0<\/span>origins of amber too. According to the Ancient Greeks, Phaeton, the son of\u00a0<\/span>the Sun god Helios, wanted to equal his father but lost control of the fiery\u00a0<\/span>chariot and fell from the sky into the sea. The tears of his sisters, the\u00a0<\/span>Heliades, turned into stone, becoming drops of amber. So amber is\u00a0<\/span>associated with jealousy, grandeur and mourning? The Lithuanian legend\u00a0<\/span>about the goddess Jurat\u0117, who lived in an amber castle on the bottom of the\u00a0<\/span>Baltic Sea, fell in love with a mortal fisherman that ended up costing her a\u00a0<\/span>shattered castle and a broken heart, talks about unrequited love and loyalty.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s astounding how much passion these fossilised resin pieces arouse:\u00a0<\/span>love, hate, jealousy, mourning, disobedience and pride.\u00a0<\/span>The artists participating in this exhibition face amber so as to show it\u00a0<\/span>their love, or to try to overcome it, all while being open to the unexpected.\u00a0<\/span>Twenty-one creators from eight countries \u2013 artists who have been working\u00a0<\/span>with amber for a long time, and those who have avoided it up until now.\u00a0<\/span>Various artistic traditions, different experiences and different relationships\u00a0<\/span>with amber are revealed in this exhibition through forms and narratives,\u00a0<\/span>through materials and their combinations. In any case, the unexpectedness\u00a0<\/span>hiding in amber opens up a whole spectrum of emotions in each one of us:\u00a0<\/span>enchantment, wonderment, admiration, hope… and whatever else you\u00a0<\/span>might add.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
