\"\"<\/a>National Gallery of Art of the LNMA opens an exhibition <\/span>Pranas Dom\u0161aitis (1880\u20131965). <\/span><\/i>Her\/His Figure <\/span><\/i>by the renowned expressionist painter <\/span>Pranas Dom\u0161aitis (1880\u20131965<\/span>. The exhibition curated by Au\u0161ra Tra\u0161kelyt\u0117 features over fifty <\/span>Dom\u0161aitis\u2019s <\/span>paintings, which together provide a figure in the round of the artist \u2013 a nomad, migrant and an emigrant. A recently updated edition of the main collection by the painter\u2019s artwork is on permanent display at Pranas <\/span>Dom\u0161aitis Gallery of the LNMA in Klaip\u0117da. The exhibition <\/span>Pranas Dom\u0161aitis (1880\u20131965). <\/span><\/i>Her\/His Figure <\/span><\/i>in Vilnius <\/span>will be open for visitors through 6 April 2025. Concurrently, the NGA hosts an exhibition <\/span>David Goldblatt (In)visible Structures<\/span><\/i> by the world-famous photographer of the 2nd-half of the 20th century, virtuoso of social documentary photography David Goldblatt (1930\u20132018). These two artists are linked through their artistic careers in South African Republic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Foreigner without a homeland\u00a0\u00a0<\/h6>\n

Pranas Dom\u0161aitis<\/span>\u2019s artistic career<\/span> winds across East Prussia, Germany, Austria,<\/span> finally, to<\/span> South Africa. <\/span>His legacy appears a<\/span> record<\/span> of <\/span>landscapes <\/span>characteristic of<\/span> the <\/span>geographic locations where he settled for longer o<\/span>r<\/span> shorte<\/span>r<\/span> periods, but<\/span> not only,<\/span> being a true nomad, <\/span>he left <\/span>sketche<\/span>s<\/span> also <\/span>of locations visited <\/span>from<\/span> curiosity. These <\/span>are<\/span> mostly <\/span>views of the <\/span>countries outside the <\/span>bounds of the <\/span>European continent<\/span> \u2013\u00a0<\/span> Tunisia, Somalia, the Bosphorus Strait, Turkey <\/span>are examples.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition <\/span>Pranas Dom\u0161aitis (1880\u20131965). <\/span><\/i>Her\/His Figure <\/span><\/i>marries<\/span> two classical genres of painting<\/span>,<\/span> portrait and landscape. By selecting the artworks within these generic categories, the curator of the exhibition suggests to <\/span>observe<\/span> the <\/span>nuances of colour of these geographic<\/span>ally diverse<\/span> landscapes <\/span>and to link them to the<\/span> ethnographic element of <\/span>his <\/span>sitters, mostly women<\/span>.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>The present-day<\/span> postcolonial <\/span>perspective<\/span> requires that we give a critical reflection on such a <\/span>way of seeing<\/span> other cultures and <\/span>humans<\/span>, and their identity. Yet <\/span>on the other hand, <\/span>the landscapes of pristine nature<\/span> which we juxtapose with<\/span> the<\/span> climate change<\/span> that we experience<\/span>, undoubtedly leave us in re<\/span>v<\/span>erence. Notably, the questions of identity come up also when we try to present a portrait of <\/span>Dom\u0161aitis<\/span> \u2013 a homeless foreigner <\/span>\u2013 <\/span>Heimatlose Ausl\u00e4nder<\/span>,\u201d <\/span>Au\u0161ra Tra\u0161kelyt\u0117 <\/span>shares her reflections on the exhibition<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The connections with Lithuania\u00a0\u00a0<\/h6>\n

Though the artist was brought up and came of age in German <\/span>milieu<\/span>, <\/span>Dom\u0161aitis actively proclaimed his Lithuanian origins<\/span>. I<\/span>n 1920, he was issued a Lithuanian passport; around 1938, he started signing his artwork by the Lithuanian version of his name, as Domsaitis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following his encounter of the<\/span> Lithuanian \u00e9migr\u00e9 artists in post-war Austria, Dom\u0161aitis participated in the war-refugee exhibitions as a Lithuanian artist. The connections that <\/span>began<\/span> in Austria were sustained throughout his life: he communicated with these artists by letters<\/span>,<\/span> and took part in the exhibitions arranged by them in the USA and Canada. In 1979, Dom\u0161aitis, with his wife Adelheida Armhold<\/span>,<\/span> left for<\/span> the<\/span> South African Republic, where they settled in Cape Town. The painter soon became part of the local art scene, he exhibited frequently in solo events, and in 1963, represented the country at the prestigious San Paolo Biennial.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The artist\u2019s legacy\u00a0\u00a0<\/h6>\n

Pranas Dom\u0161aitis was always<\/span> mentioned among art celebrities \u2013 before <\/span>the Second <\/span>World War<\/span>, <\/span>mostly in Europe, and especially so in Germany, after the war, in the Republic of South Africa, <\/span>his art is definitely part of the<\/span> history of modern art. In 1964, he won the prestigious Artists of Fame and Promise competition, one of the top prizes in South Africa.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exact<\/span> scope of the artist\u2019s legacy is <\/span>impossible to tell<\/span>, part of his artwork was lost, his other works are held by the museums and private collections in Germany, Austria, Canada, South Africa and elsewhere. The biggest collection <\/span>of<\/span> 665 artworks <\/span>that <\/span>w<\/span>as<\/span> donated <\/span>by the Lithuanian Foundation <\/span>based <\/span>in the USA to the Lithuanian National Museum of Art <\/span>is on display<\/span> at the permanent exhibition <\/span>Always on the Road <\/span><\/i>at <\/span>the <\/span>Pranas Dom\u0161aitis Gallery of the LNMA.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The artist coming alive in a comics book\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/h6>\n

This November<\/span> at the Vilnius Dom\u0161aitis\u2019s exhibition, <\/span>the Pranas Dom\u0161aitis Gallery will present<\/span>,<\/span> a unique publication <\/span>Daugiau nei mato akys: komiksas apie Pran\u0105 Dom\u0161ait\u012f ir meno sroves <\/span><\/i>[<\/span>More Then Eyes Can See: A Comics About Pranas Dom\u0161aitis and Movements in Art<\/span><\/i>] <\/span><\/i>\u2013 a comics book designed together with Migl<\/span>\u0117<\/span> Anu<\/span>\u0161<\/span>auskait<\/span>\u0117.<\/span> The comics book not only tells the life story of Dom\u0161aitis, but also introduces the movements in art that shaped and enriched his <\/span>style<\/span>. The book for young adults and adults will help to answer such questions as why his art was included into the Nazi<\/span>–<\/span> organized exhibitions of <\/span>the <\/span>\u201cDegenerate art\u201d<\/span> or<\/span> what European modernism learned from African art, among others.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
