On 18 July the National Gallery of Art of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art (LNMA) opens its new grand exhibition <\/span>Between Dawns. Acquisitions of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art. 2015-2025<\/span><\/i> that invites to look at the past decade through the eyes of the Museum \u2013 their discoveries and the artwork selected as worthwhile to preserve for the future and to acquire.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between 2015 and 2025, the collection of the LNDM was augmented by 22,000 new pieces of fine, folk and applied arts. O these new pieces 1,791 have been included by purchase. The numbers evidence the intensity of the collection\u2019s expansion and the important shifts in the strategy of the Museum, which is increasingly shaped not only by historical memory, but a strong awareness of modern-day challenges.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn preparation to meet one of our major annual events, the Museum\u2019s community has an opportunity to revisit the LNMA\u2019s mission \u201cto preserve the artistic heritage and to strengthen the awareness of its importance in positively transforming people\u2019s everyday life.\u201d The exhibition meets both aims at the same time, by publicly presenting the growth of the collection and by bringing to the fore, in an ingenuine form, the value of art. I am delighted that the constant growth of museum visits enabled us to dedicate the Museum\u2019s own revenue for the purchase of the most valuable artwork created by the Lithuanian artists,\u201d Dr Ar\u016bnas Gel\u016bnas, director general of the LNMA refers to the tendencies of acquisitions.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition showcases artwork by the artists of different generations from the late19th century to contemporary figures. It is a meeting place of perspectives of several epochs: here, contemporary Lithuanian creators, such as Egl\u0117 Budvytyt\u0117, Pakui Hardware (Neringa \u010cerniauskait\u0117, Ugnius Gelguda), Lina Lapelyt\u0117 or Gintaras Did\u017eiapetris, dialogue with the artwork by the foremost figures of modernism, Kazimiera Zimblyt\u0117 or Algimantas Jonas Kuras, also with the <\/span>\u00e9migr\u00e9 <\/span>artists Aleksandra Kasuba, Romas Viesulas, Neemija Arbit Blatas. More frequent visitors of the LNMA will also recognize the artwork by foreign artists exhibited in Vilnius during several past years. Part of the new acquisitions get their first public appearance offering a unique opportunity to experience the most recent pieces in the Museum\u2019s collection firsthand.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between Dawns<\/span><\/i> is structured along the lines of four collections of visual art \u2013 painting, graphic art, photography and sculpture, in reflection of not only the logic of the \u201cGrand Archive\u201d, but of the proportions in which medium-based artwork entered the collection over the past decade.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition curators Goda Aksamitauskait\u0117, Giedrius Gulbinas, Egla Mikalaj\u016bn\u0117 and Au\u0161ra Trak\u0161elyt\u0117 point out that each acquired piece is not only an aesthetic object, but also a solution of a long-term significance.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe artwork acquired today are heritage of tomorrow. The exhibition is intended to communicate that the collection is not a frozen time capsule, but a living organism that responds to social context, to the shifts of the art field, even politics,\u201d the curators discuss their concept.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between Dawns<\/span><\/i> will run until 21 September and will be accompanied by the meetings and creative workshops with the featured artists offering to experience their creative mindsets and their work process firsthand. Visitors are invited, on the occasion of the opening, to curator-guided tours on 19 and 24 July (booking will be shortly announced via NGA social media and the Gallery\u2019s newsletter).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The atmosphere for the opening night on 18 July will be created by Big Tasty, one of the members of series \u201cBetween Two Dawns\u201d team. The choice is a symbolical reminder that the Museum and collection are not only history, but also a dialogue with the dynamic contemporary life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
