On the 5th March, at 5.30 pm the Clock and Watch Museum of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art opens an exhibition Senses and Sensations<\/em> inviting the local and visiting Klaip\u0117da public to explore the subtle moods and strong sensations shaping our inner world. On the opening night, the rich emotional world will be expressed through movement in a dance performance by the students of the Dance Department at the Klaip\u0117da Faculty of the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018We are proud to present an impressive edition of the Senses and Sensations<\/em> to the city of Klaip\u0117da and to the entire Lithuanian coastal region. We have adjusted the display to the theme of time by introducing into it historical clocks decorated in ornate sculptural compositions. Besides focusing on senses and emotions, the educational activities designed to accompany the exhibition will dwell on a deeper understanding of our experience of time, the feeling of \u201cTempus fugit\u201d\u2019, Romualdas Martinkus, director of the museum and the exhibition architect introduces thematic nuances of the event. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Half-a-millennium of artistic aspirations to render the invisible visible<\/h6>\n

How can we possibly communicate any of these intangible things \u2013 smell, sound, taste or touch, and, even more, embrace the entire spectrum of human sensations?\u00a0 These daily sensations are sharpened by the five senses \u2013 sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Though universal, none of the arising inner experiences are simple to depict, they slip over the boundaries of the visible shapes. However, they are the ageless inspiration for the artists, close observers of the world: in order to communicate a fleeting mood, an inner trepidation or a shadow of memory, the artists discovered ways to integrate these invisible movements of the soul into their works of art.<\/p>\n

The exhibition bridges the ways of depicting senses and sensations in the fine and applied arts from the 16th through the early 20th centuries. The public is invited not to limit themselves to the curator-proposed narrative, but to use their own imagination in interpreting the exhibits and to seek individual emotional response from the works of art.<\/p>\n

The feast of senses and sensations that has won the publics\u2019 hearts<\/h6>\n

The exhibition Senses and Sensations<\/em> has already fascinated the visitors of the Vilnius Picture Gallery. According to the curators Dr Joana Vitkut\u0117 and Gabija Kasparavi\u010di\u016bt\u0117-Kaminskien\u0117, the Vilnius event was a largely positive experience: \u201cThe exhibition Senses and Sensibilities<\/em>, hosted by the Vilnius Picture Gallery from December 2024 through May 2025, was a true curatorial adventure to us. We started with doubts whether we would find enough specimen reflecting the complex world of senses and emotions among the mainly solemn and static ancient pieces. Luckily, our misgivings did not come true \u2013 from the collections of the art museums and the libraries of the Lithuanian and foreign institutions, we succeeded to draw the artwork for a veritable feast of senses and sensations, appreciated also by the exhibition visitors. It was interesting to observe different interpretation of specific works and the variety of emotions and memories they excited in the viewers. We are happy that the exhibition Senses and Sensations<\/em>, adjusted specifically for the Clock and Watch Museum will soon open in Klaip\u0117da to reveal the mysterious inner world through the ancient paintings. The fact that this edition is not the first collaboration between the Vilnius Picture Gallery and the Clock and Watch Museum is also important, and we hope to keep up this practice in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The possibility to experience a broad spectrum of senses and sensations at the Clock and Watch Museum will be open until the 6th September. The display is accompanied by guided tours, including curator-guided events and educational activities. The information on specific events and times will be posted on the LNMA website and social networks.<\/p>\n
