Thursday, 18th June, the Pranas\u00a0Dom\u0161aitis\u00a0Gallery of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art opened\u00a0\u017dilvinas\u00a0Landzbergas\u2019s\u00a0exhibition\u00a0Sister\u00a0tell\u00a0me\u00a0your\u00a0name<\/i><\/strong>. The exhibition turns\u00a0the\u00a0gallery spaces into a home of an extended\u00a0nuclear\u00a0family, and\u00a0invites viewers to look at the world with the eyes of a small girl.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThe art by\u00a0\u017dilvinas\u00a0Landzbergas\u00a0is always intriguing and full of surprises,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Skaist\u0117\u00a0Mar\u010dien\u0117,\u00a0director of the Pranas\u00a0Dom\u0161aitis\u00a0Gallery of the LNMA. \u201cEach exhibition of his conjures up a unique miniature\u00a0world which links\u00a0different aspects\u00a0\u2013 the image and space,\u00a0the\u00a0narrative and experience. This exhibition is mostly about experience: it invites not just look, but immerse into the artist-created environment,\u00a0allow\u00a0it sink\u00a0in\u00a0and\u00a0unlock some\u00a0personal meanings\u00a0in it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lock code to the family story\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the exhibition curator\u00a0<\/span>Anders\u00a0Kreuger<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Landzbergas\u00a0in this exhibition assumes an unexpected role to reveal himself,\u00a0that of\u00a0\u201can\u00a0artist-designer\u00a0\u2013\u00a0who gives form to everyday life. Having in mind the nature of\u00a0Landzbergas\u2019s\u00a0art, this concept from the Lithuanian twentieth century still feels relevant.\u00a0The artist works with, for and through other people. He and his work need the viewers and participants to come alive.\u202fLandzbergas\u00a0clearly plays with this interaction.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors are invited to step into\u00a0a\u00a0space of the\u00a0mundane,\u00a0made up\u00a0up\u00a0by the artist. It is\u00a0visually and emotionally enhanced to recall a film set, theatre stage, or a curiosity cabinet. However, this space will not be entered directly \u2013 at the museum\u2019s\u00a0reception, visitors will be given a lock code, as if they are invited to someone\u2019s\u00a0private\u00a0place.\u00a0But a home needs tenants, and an exhibition\u00a0\u2013\u00a0visitors. The artist consciously explores this dependence creating an inclusive space, where visitors are invited not only to\u00a0observe, but become part of the\u00a0story.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon entering the\u00a0exhibition room, guests will\u00a0see\u00a0something of\u00a0a domestic world \u2013 separate\u00a0areas of the\u00a0family members,\u00a0the rooms of the father, mother,\u00a0grandmother\u00a0and children\u00a0are characterized by\u00a0the atmosphere and detail.\u00a0The exhibition resembles of a fragmented puzzle which uses abstract form to\u00a0reach to the\u00a0elusive roots of human identity.\u00a0It weaves together names, smells, tactile experiences, works,\u00a0places\u00a0and feelings\u00a0into a\u00a0tapestry\u00a0of experience\u00a0where everything takes place simultaneously and becomes part of personal existence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The right to feel safe\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Landzbergas\u00a0says he created\u00a0<\/span>Sister tell me your name<\/span><\/i>\u00a0to emulate the treasure box\u00a0usually kept by\u00a0young girls. Other\u00a0people are\u00a0occasionally allowed to\u00a0take a look\u00a0at them, if\u00a0with\u00a0due\u00a0respect and politeness.\u00a0The same applies to this display. This encourages to contemplate the theme of vulnerability and the human right to feel safe. The set up of the exhibition invites to\u00a0try\u00a0out a round soft platform,\u00a0from this position\u00a0visitors realize they\u00a0are\u00a0looking\u00a0at this\u00a0family space from the daughter\u2019s perspective. The exhibition invites to appreciate the family day-off and mundane aesthetics,\u00a0reminding also\u00a0that at the time of war it\u00a0cannot\u00a0be\u00a0taken for granted or\u00a0guaranteed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Walking the exhibition platforms as\u00a0the\u00a0corridors of a forgotten home, visitors are\u00a0finally\u00a0led into an elegant garden where the artist has installed a hothouse tower. This enhances the surrealist illusion of a home in a museum\u00a0even further,\u00a0opening yet another\u00a0facet\u00a0and the world conjured up by the exhibition.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The creator of immersive experiences and events\u00a0accompanying\u00a0the exhibition\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u017dilvinas\u00a0Landzbergas, born in 1979, is a renowned Lithuanian artist. He\u00a0represented\u00a0his country at the Venice Biennale in 2017 and has\u00a0participated\u00a0in many other international exhibitions, such as the S\u00e3o Paulo and Riga biennials in 2018. Trained as a sculptor at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, where he also teaches, and at the independent artists\u2019 institute De Ateliers in Amsterdam, he is best known for his comprehensive installations.\u202fThese typically combine\u00a0sculptures and paintings\u00a0and drawings, and sometimes also\u00a0moving-image\u00a0works, into immersive but always distinctly\u00a0personal experiences\u00a0for diverse audiences.\u00a0Landzbergas\u00a0also\u00a0curates\u00a0exhibitions with other artists. In 2011\u20132013 he ran his own exhibition space in Vilnius,\u00a0Malonioji\u00a06. He is represented by Meno parkas in Kaunas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Landzbergas\u2019s\u00a0exhibition will run at the Pranas\u00a0Dom\u0161aitis\u00a0Gallery until 28th\u00a0February,\u00a02027. It will be accompanied by tours and educational events. Please visit the museum website and social media for detailed information.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Exhibition visitors will have an opportunity to\u00a0explore the same themes in a cinema hall. Together with a special film programme\u00a0accompanying\u00a0<\/span>Sister\u00a0tell\u00a0me\u00a0your\u00a0name,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>the documentary festival\u00a0<\/span>Inconvenient Films,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>which marks its 20th anniversary this year<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>returns to\u00a0Klaip\u0117da\u00a0after a year\u2019s break.\u00a0In response to the exhibition\u2019s themes of family, identity, origin and human relations, the festival curators have selected three documentaries.\u00a0They will be screened on\u00a0the\u00a05th\u00a0\u2013\u00a025th\u00a0October.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
